Frequently Asked Questions

Text Box: What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the activation and balance of Qi (pronounced “Chee”) by the insertion of fine, sterile needles at specific acupoints on the body. It is a safe, painless and effective way to treat many medical disorders.
Text Box: Do the needles hurt?
Because acupuncture needles are about as thin as a human hair, most people feel nothing when the needle is placed. The sensation caused by an acupuncture needle varies. Most people say that the sensation is momentary and once inserted, they cannot tell where the needle is.

Text Box: What is Qi?
Qi (aka Life Energy) circulates throughout the body on specific pathways called meridians. The quality, quantity and balance of Qi determines a persons health. When Qi is not flowing freely, is restricted or obstructed, the body is not nourished and cannot function optimally leading to disease. Qi becomes blocked or unbalanced for many reasons: stress, emotional or physical trauma, diet, accidents, lack of exercise.
Text Box: Why will you look at my tongue and take my pulse?
The tongue is a map of the body reflecting the general health of the organs and meridians. Color, shape, cracks and coating are noted as well.
You wrists will be checked for the quality of 12 pulses. These are different than the pulse taken by a western trained medical doctor. A total of 27 individual qualities will be noted which reflect your overall health.
Text Box: How Often will I need to come?
Your frequency of treatment depends on many factors; the severity of the problem, acute illness vs. chronic condition and strength of your Qi to name a few. It took some time for the body to become in this unbalanced state, and although acupuncture will take a fraction of the time to help you heal, you will need time to heal.
